Good as Gold - The Event

Ladies First Hockey Foundation Sets New Good As Gold Event Record
In Support of The Players of Canada's National Women's Hockey Program

Toronto, Ontario (June 28, 2013) – The Ladies First Hockey Foundation recently hosted their 11th Annual Signature Event, Good As Gold, celebrating the players of the Canadian National Women’s Hockey Program.  As the Foundation closed out what many consider an unparalleled event in its 11 year history, it was proudly announced that a new individual event fundraising record had been set, raising over $155,000 (with 100% of all net funds going to the players and program).  This exciting number also takes the total raised since the event’s founding, over a decade ago, to just shy of $1,200,000.  This new record was shared at the event’s closing “Breakfast of Champions” celebrating the current 2013 World Championship Team Members and all hopeful of earning a spot on the 2014 Canadian Olympic Team in Sochi, Russia.  The Ladies First Hockey Foundation hosts this annual signature event in partnership and support of the Canadian National Women’s Hockey players, program and team.

Following a decade history in Muskoka the Foundation moved the event home this year to Niagara Falls, at the Marriott Gateway On The Falls and was made more than welcome in the comforting new home of a great Canadian hockey and recreation city.  The Foundation was proud to once again welcome back, as the weekend’s Master of Ceremonies, Canadian Sports Commentator John Bartlett.  This event could not enjoy the success it does without the generous support and partnership of its sponsors and participants.  Good As Gold was once again lead by Presenting Sponsor, The Globe and Mail, whom has been the lead partner for each of the Foundation’s last ten years.  The Globe presented Good As Gold in partnership with both Bank Of Montréal Insurance and Deloitte Canada with an overall new record number of event sponsors (whom can all be found identified on the Foundation’s web page directly at the Sponsors page.

This unique event opened in tradition as participants were welcomed by Presenting Sponsor Phillip Crawley (CEO & Publisher of The Globe and Mail).  The crowd then enjoyed a special experience as Team Canada’s Meaghan Mikkelson-Reid not only personally thanked sponsors on behalf of the team for their support of the National Women’s Program but shared stories of the player’s recent 3 week experiences at the Hockey Canada Boot & Selection Camp opening in Penticton (British Columbia) for the 2014 Olympic Team.  Team Canada players then interacted with all participants for a fun evening of great food, auctions and entertainment to the music of Kenny Munshaw while sharing their experiences as the elite athletes and very special ambassadors to Canada they each are.

Saturday morning all participants boarded Niagara’s Double-Decker buses (sponsored by Traction Heavy Duty) making their way to the annual Good as Gold Golf Tournament (sponsored by Glacier Media) taking place at the wonderful Thundering Waters Golf & Country Club (John Daly signature course).   The tournament’s unique experience is that an individual member of the Women’s National Team or Alumni joins each foursome to spend the day together – a highlight for both sponsor partner and player.  Saturday evening then featured a beautiful experience as the Jackson-Triggs Winery hosted an evening of wine, tasting stations and wonderful views and entertainment over the vineyard (sponsored by Sun Life Financial).

Sunday morning closed with the annual and celebrated “Breakfast of Champions”, sponsored by Hockey Canada.  With all members of the Women’s National Team and guest Alumni in attendance it became an intimate opportunity for the Players and Foundation to acknowledge and thank guests and sponsors while showcasing what outstanding role models & leaders these women are. Highlights of the Breakfast included a video overview of the player’s experiences at Hockey Canada’s Olympic Boot & Selection Camp shared by Team Canada’s Assistant Captain Caroline Ouellette as she addressed and thanked the crowd; a sharing of appreciation on behalf of Hockey Canada from Dan Church (current Head Coach of the Canadian Team);  and iconic Team Canada Alumni Thérèse Brisson shared with the crowd a reflection of both the history and exciting path Women’s Hockey continues on (Thérèse is both a past Team Canada Captain and current member of the Canadian Olympic Committee).

Good as Gold was then closed by Sponsor Partner (and Ladies First Board Member & Executive Director) Peter McCarthy (President & CEO of BMO Insurance).

A special note as OxygenPur provided gifts for the playersand Molson Coors provided beverages and special donations for the event.

The Ladies First Foundation and players of the National Team extend their sincere appreciation to the event partner sponsors for all the support from across Canada as the program continues to drive towards the 2014 Winter Olympics & next World Competitions.
