Ladies First Hockey Foundation Sets New Good As Gold Event Record
Supporting Canada’s Team and Sochi Gold Medal Women’s Hockey Players
Toronto, Ontario (June 26, 2014) – The Ladies First Hockey Foundation recently hosted the 12 th Annual Signature Event, Good As Gold, celebrating the 2014 Sochi Gold Medal Players from Canada’s National Women’s Hockey Program. Canadians will always remember where they were for that inspiring comeback and captivating overtime win which helped create an unparalleled energy in the Good As Gold event’s 12 year history. That energy helped drive a new event fundraising record, eclipsing previous years and raising over $175,000 (with 100% of all net funds benefiting the players, families and program). This exciting record brings the total raised since the event’s founding to over $1,375,000. This new record was announced at the event’s closing “Breakfast of Champions” celebrating the current 2014 Gold Medal Team Members. The Ladies First Hockey Foundation hosts this annual signature event in partnership and direct support of Hockey Canada’s National Women’s Hockey players, program and team.
Good As Gold returned this year to Niagara Falls, at the Marriott Gateway On The Falls and once again welcomed back, as the weekend’s Master of Ceremonies, Canadian Sports Commentator John Bartlett (known widely as, “the voice of the Canadiens”). This event could not enjoy the success it does without the generous support and partnership of its sponsors and participants. Good As Gold was once again lead by Presenting Sponsor, The Globe and Mail, whom has been the lead partner for each of the Foundation’s last eleven years. The Globe presented Good As Gold in partnership with both BMO Insurance and an overall new record number of event sponsors (whom can all be found identified on the Foundation’s web page directly at: http://www.ladiesfirsthockeyfoundation.com/sponsors.html
This unique event opened in tradition as participants were welcomed first by high energy video tributes and player introductions, followed by Presenting Sponsor Phillip Crawley (CEO & Publisher of The Globe and Mail). The crowd then enjoyed a special reflection from Team Canada’s Assistant Captain Jayna Hefford, whom personally thanked sponsors on behalf of the team for their support of the National Women’s Program and shared stories of the player’s 12 month preparation from Hockey Canada Boot & Selection Camp 80 Yorkminster Road, Toronto, Ontario, M2P 1M3 www.ladiesfirsthockeyfoundation.com through to the 2014 Olympic Gold Medal Dream. Team Canada players then interacted with participants for a fun evening of outstanding food, auctions and entertainment to the music of Kenny Munshaw while sharing their experiences as the elite athletes and special ambassadors to Canada they are.
Following Saturday morning breakfast (sponsored by Cadillac Fairview) participants boarded a train of Niagara’s Double-Decker buses (sponsored all weekend by Traction Heavy Duty) making their way to the Good as Gold Golf Tournament (sponsored by Glacier Media Grop, Cushman & Wakefield and OK Tire) taking place at the Thundering Waters Golf & Country Club (John Daly signature course). The tournament’s unique experience is that a member of the Women’s National Team or Alumni joins each foursome to spend the day together – a highlight for both sponsor partner and player. Saturday evening then featured a beautiful experience as the Jackson-Triggs Winery hosted an evening of wine, tasting stations and wonderful views and entertainment over the vineyard (sponsored by AIA Canada/Be Car Care Aware and SmartTerm.ca). This special evening also included a wonderful player memory for guests (sponsored by Hockey Canada).
Sunday morning closed with the annual and celebrated “Breakfast of Champions” (sponsored by FirstGulf Corporation). With all members of the Women’s National Team and guest Alumni in attendance it became an intimate opportunity for the Players and Foundation to acknowledge and thank guests and sponsors while showcasing what outstanding role models & leaders these women are. Highlights of the Breakfast included a video overview of the player’s Olympic experiences (special thank you to Hockey Canada) and then reflections shared from Team Canada Captain Caroline Ouellette as she addressed and thanked the crowd while making a special presentation capturing the Olympic Journey of the players to the Team, Ladies First Board Members and key individuals that helped along this path. This book was captured for production by The Globe and Mail and dmdigital+1.
The morning crowd also enjoyed the sharing of appreciation on behalf of Hockey Canada from Melody Davidson (current General Manager of Hockey Canada’s Women’s Program).
Good as Gold was then closed by Sponsor Partner (and Ladies First Board Member & Executive Director) Peter McCarthy (President & CEO of BMO Insurance).
A special notes as OxygenPur provided gifts to each of the players; Molson Coors provided beverages and special donations for the event and the CWHL (Canadian Women’s Hockey League), which is the host professional league for 16 members of Canada’s Gold Medal Team (and past & future members) provided special VIP opportunities for all to enjoy the player’s Club Teams for the coming entire season.
The Ladies First Foundation and players of the National Team extend their sincere appreciation to the event partner sponsors for all the support from across Canada as the program continues to drive such incredible success on the world scale. These athletes are elite athletes; role model individuals and ambassadors to all Canadians.
